How to appeal a grievance outcome or a disciplinary sanction, including dismissal.
Checked against official sources on 11 October 2026
How to appeal
- Check the outcome letter and your employer’s policy for any deadline to appeal.
- Write to your employer without unreasonable delay, saying you are appealing and why.
- Set out your grounds: for example new evidence, an unfair process, or a sanction that is too harsh.
- You can bring a colleague or union rep to the appeal hearing.
- The appeal should, where possible, be heard by a manager who was not involved before.
- Your employer should tell you the result in writing.
If you have been dismissed
The tribunal time limit runs from your last day of employment, not from the appeal result. Do not wait for the appeal before working out your deadline and contacting ACAS.
